FAMILY FUN AT THE QUICK NAUTICAL EQUIPMENT POKER RUN
Summer arrived in time for the 2008 Quick Nautical Equipment Auckland Poker Run held in association with Propeller Magazine. Documentation and the briefing were held at the now traditional venue of the Richmond Yacht Club in Westhaven on Friday evening with many taking the opportunity to enjoy the magnificent harbour views from the club’s bar and bistro, at the conclusion of the night’s formalities.
The forecast light easterly and blue skies greeted the participants for the start of their day of boating fun based from Degree Gastrobar at Auckland’s Viaduct Harbour. After collecting their first set of quiz questions from the patrol boat off Orakei participants in a wide variety of craft, including the new Propeller Magazine camera boat , the latest Haines Signature Bowrider powered by a Suzuki 175hp 4-Stroke, headed for the card stop behind Tiri Tiri Matangi Island where they collected their first card.
A run across to the Rakino Island card stop and another set of tricky quiz questions; based on boating safety, general knowledge of the Hauraki Gulf, sponsors products and landmarks around the course. It was then into Viaduct harbour with the quay coming alive with the arrival of the many and varied craft and their excited crews for the third card stop and lunch break hosted by the vibrant Degree Gastrobar in its waterfront setting
Following lunch participants headed out to the afternoon’s restart off Orakei collecting their final set of questions for the Family Quiz before heading out around the Hauraki Gulf islands of Rangitoto, Motutapu and Rakino to a further card stop, returning to Viaduct Harbour and Degree Gastrobar for the final card and prize giving in the evening.
Winner of the 2008 Quick Nautical Equipment Auckland Poker Run - In association with Propeller Magazine, with the day’s best 5-card hand, an Ace-high Flush was North Shore’s Phillip Fairfield in the appropriately named “Happy Ending” a 90hp Mercury powered 5.1 metre Fi-Glass. A very happy Phillip and his team took home a 32 inch Sharp LCD television, the Quick Nautical Equipment Auckland Poker Run - In association with Propeller Magazine Trophy and a framed "Poker Run" poster.
Second also with a Flush, but this time Queen-high, was Frank Van Hattum in “Franklynn,” a 140hp Mercury powered Tristram Avant 641, who took away a HP mutli function printer/scanner and framed "Poker Run" poster and third with a 3 Queens in “Maxum” a 300hp Mercruiser powered Maxum. He went away with an IPod and a framed "Poker Run" poster.
Winning the Pier 21 Marine Centre award of a month’s free drystacking to the best hand held by a Pier 21 Drystack resident craft was James Bourke in his Yamaha150hp powered Buccaneer 605 Excess.
A separate competition and a major part of the Quick Nautical Equipment Auckland Poker Run - In association with Propeller Magazine, is the Family Quiz, this year won by Frank Van Hattum in “Franklynn” a 140hp Mercury powered Tristram Avant 641. He left very happily with a 32' Sharp LCD TV and a framed "Poker Run" poster. Coming second, with only one point separating them, was David Pringle in an Evinrude 200hp powered Smuggler Stealth winning a HP multi function printer/scanner and framed "Poker Run" poster and third a further one point behind in third was Rodger Puttick in “Spirit of Cheyenne” a twin 540ci Chev powered 8.8mtr Fountain. He won an IPod and a framed "Poker Run" poster.
The Meguires and Simpson Powerbase Award for the "Best Dressed" crew went to Peter Esher and his crew in "007" who were appropriately dressed in tuxedos and the runner up prize went to the pirate crew in David Osborne's "Black Friday".
The "Hard Luck" prize, also sponsored by Meguires and Simpson Powerbase went to Laurence Moulder on the 2.5mtr Seadoo "Canam Construction Racing" who not only broke down but lost his cellphone and ended up very cold and wet.
Coast Guard Hibiscus who have supported the Auckland Poker Run out on the water from its inception, are receiving a fund raising donation from the organisers. The Hibiscus Coast based trust is a subsidiary of Coast Guard Northern Region and is constantly looking for enthusiastic volunteers who receive comprehensive training in the latest search and rescue methods.

IT’S NOT TOO LATE IF YOU’RE QUICK
The organisers of the Quick Nautical Equipment Auckland Poker Run – In association with Propeller Magazine are extremely excited having received the largest number of Early Bird entries in the events history. “It’s fantastic, the team arrived back from organising the Gold Coast event to find the Post Office Box absolutely jammed packed full of entries,” said Event Director Stuart Roberts.
It’s still not to late to enter if you are Quick; Late Entries close at the compulsory Skipper briefing at 7:00pm at the Richmond Yacht Club at Westhaven Marina, Auckland, on Friday the 7th November.
Quick Nautical Equipment will have the latest marine lighting technology on display, the revolutionary new Zelig LED bulbs which can convert any conventional halogen or xenon bulb lighting to LED, drawing only 2.2 watts of power per light and a new compact wide flood beam LED Deck Light which can be mounted up to 3 meters above the deck, designed to replace conventional high current draw cockpit floodlights.
The 2008 Quick Nautical Equipment Poker Run – In association with Propeller Magazine kicks off on the water at 10am on Saturday the 8th of November in the vicinity of Orakei and weather permitting heads down the Rangitoto Channel keeping the East Coast Bays beaches to port through the Tiri Channel to the first card checkpoint around Tiritiri Matangi Island. Keeping Tiritiri Matangi Island to Starboard participants proceed to the second Card Stop east of Rakino Island and head through the Motuihe Channel to the third Card Stop at Viaduct Harbour and the lunch stop at Degree Gastrobar.
The 2008 Quick Nautical Equipment Poker Run – In association with Propeller Magazine restarts at 2pm off Orakei, heads through the Rangitoto Channel, keeping Rangitoto Island and Motutapu Island to Starboard. Card Stop 4 is around Rakino Island. Participants keep Motutapu Island and Rangitoto Island to Starboard and proceed through the Motuihe Channel and Motukorea Channel to the Final Card Stop in Degree Gastrobar at Viaduct Harbour.
The best spectator point for those not out on the water is North Head at Devonport at 10:00am on Saturday morning, Viaduct Harbour at lunch time and 2:00pm back at North Head on Saturday afternoon. ENTRIES ROLL IN FOR QUICK NAUTICAL EQUIPMENT AUCKLAND POKER RUN IN ASSOCIATION WITH PROPELLER MAGAZINE
The team from Propeller Magazine will be out in force on the water in their new camera boat, the latest Haines Signature Bowrider powered by a 175hp Suzuki 4-Stroke.
Alan Carter and his team are returning in “Thirsty Rooster” a 150hp Yamaha powered 7.9 metre Pelin. A very excited Alan and his team were last year’s winners taking home a flat screen television and the Quick Nautical Equipment Auckland Poker Run - In association with Propeller Magazine Trophy with the day’s best 5-card hand, a Flush.
A boat which should give Grant Valder in his Mercury 225 Promax powered Stealth poker run cat “Gunsmoke” a run for his money is David Blackmore and team in an Australian built 1990 Fastlane 32, which has just been repowered with a pair of Mercruiser 500 EFI race engines running through Mercury Blackhawk surface drives. Also on the attack will be the Family Boats Team in the public debut of the new Assault 890, a 8.9 metre full cabin rigid hull inflatable powered by a 300hp Yamaha V8 4-stroke outboard.
Laying down the challenge and looking to repeat last years Best Hand by a PWC, Laurence Moulden is back on a later model craft, his new 2006 215Hp Seadoo RXP 4-Stroke. Karl Thomson is back on his 2007 Kawasaki Ultra 250X along with Dwayne Cocker on his 1500cc 4-Stroke Seadoo to give him a run for his money, in fact the organisers have reported a record number of inquiries from riders of Personal Water Craft stepping up to the challenge this year.

Early Bird entries received before Monday 6 October 2008 will receive an extra poker hand. While the boat receives a hand of cards as part of the entry package there is the opportunity for each “crew” member to also have a hand of cards for a small additional cost, making the event even more exciting. Teams also have the opportunity to purchase an extra random card at the end of the day, particularly appealing if you are just one card away from that winning straight flush.
The compulsory Skipper briefing on Friday the 7th of November, the evening before the event, will again be held this year at the Richmond Yacht Club, situated at Westhaven Marina. Quick Nautical Equipment, renowned for high quality anchor winches, smart battery chargers, water heaters, bow thrusters and other nautical accessories will be there as well with the latest updates. A swimwear / fashion promotion is possibly also on the cards!
Starting on Saturday morning off Orakei Wharf, Quick Nautical Equipment Poker Run participants will follow a relatively compact course around the inner Hauraki Gulf before returning for the third card checkpoint and lunch break at Viaduct Harbour. The event will restart after the lunch break, following another course around the inner Hauraki Gulf before returning to Viaduct Harbour and prize giving at Degree Gastrobar.
Hibiscus Sea Rescue will be out on the course and are receiving a fund raising donation from the organisers. QUICK ACTION SECURES 2008 NAMING RIGHTS
Quick Nautical Equipment has again secured the naming rights to the Auckland Poker Run. Darryll Hart, Managing Director of Marine Direct announced, “We’ve acted quickly to tie up the naming rights while the fun and excitement of last year is still fresh in everyone’s minds. Quick Nautical Equipment, renowned for high quality anchor winches, smart battery chargers, water heaters, bow thrusters and other nautical accessories is excited to again be a part of this glamorous high profile family boating event.”

Also Quick off the mark was Glen Urquhart who has registered as this years first entry with his Poker Run Team in the bright yellow Café’ Royale, his Classic class New Zealand Offshore Powerboat Championship 502 cubic inch Mercruiser powered 10m Robson monohull. Although the event is not a race and not open to canopied race boats, many of New Zealand’s top offshore racing teams participate as an opportunity to display their craft to the public and take their sponsors out for a family fun day on the water.
